Company History

In 1997, Robert Gregory, explored the idea of manufacturing and retailing Skidmark clothing.  More specifically, Robert wanted to produce underwear that was “stain-resistant” or “Skidmark proof.”  Coming up with a prototype was easier said than done.  At the time, Robert had no apparel experience.

Robert attempted to produce the underwear in the United States but found the production costs to be too high.  Then, he moved his manufacturing efforts to Mexico .  Robert hired a consulting firm, to assist with all aspects of getting the product produced. The underwear was successfully produced.   In July of 1999, Skidmark Clothing Co., LLC was created.  Shortly thereafter, Skidmark ran into legal problems.  Robert found out, after receiving a cease and desist letter, that the name Skidmark was owned by a race track in California .  This was very problematic because Robert had $60,000 of his own money invested in the product.  Robert was now being told to send what he considered to be his product to the right owners of the name Skidmark.  The legal problem was finally settled with the assistance of Hanes and Boone, a law firm in Austin, Texas .  The owners of Skidmark sold all rights to Robert for $28,000.  Not by any deliberate decision, Robert just stopped working on the Skidmark project for a while.

Eight years later, Robert began receiving calls from individuals and companies offering to buy Skidmark.  Within a six month period, Robert received an offer for $100k from an affiliate of a very large Racecar organization (I'm sure you can guess who that was).  And he received several other offers from investors.  All offers were declined because Robert had nearly $100,000 invested in the company (without any mention of personal time invested).  These companies and investors were able find Robert on the United States Patent and Trademark office website.  With the large increase in interest in the Skidmark brand coming in from outside parties, Robert decided in January of 2007, to start working on Skidmark again.  Robert assembled an all-star management team.  Skidmark moved its manufacturing from Mexico to Shanghai China.  And over the past 3 years, Skidmark has had extreme success.  Today the company has developed an aggressive plan of expansion through a low-cost licensing system.  The University of Texas at Austin IC˛ Institute which is an interdisciplinary research unit dealing with the “Theory and Practice of Entrepreneurial Wealth” believes Skidmark will be one of the most successful business systems to enter the market in recent history.  Skidmark is also developing “Skidmark Beer” and “Skidmark Cologne.”
